This term our topics will be:
Spring 1
Why can't a penguin live near the equator?'
In this topic, we will be incredible geographers whilst we will learn all about the world's seven continents and five oceans, identify seasonal and daily weather patterns in the UK and the location of hot and cold areas of the world in relation to the Equator, the North and South Poles. We will use simple compass directions (North, South, East and West) and locational and directional language (near/far, left/right) to describe the location of features and routes on a map.
Within this topic, we will also be amazing artists as we learn about formal elements of art and design skills. We will develop a wide range of art and design techniques including colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space. We will also explore the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers and describe the differences and similarities between their work, whilst also making links to our own work.
In English, we will be completing lots of fun learning activities based on the stories ‘Lost and Found’, by Oliver Jeffers, ‘Penguin ParceL' by Victoria Cassanell, and creating our own Fact Files based on information all about emperor penguins. The children will be creating class story maps and using them to retell the stories, including lots of super story language. They will be writing sentences based on their story maps, ensuring they include their ‘Just Do It' rules (including capital letters, full stops, finger spaces, Fred talk to spell and ensuring they read and check their work makes sense). We will also be learning to plan our writing, breaking it up into a beginning, middle and end. This term we will also be looking at how to include appropriate adjectives to our writing as well as using conjunctions (eg 'and', 'but'). After learning to retell each story, we will spend time innovating it and making it our own.

Spring 2
Why are iPads more fun that my grandparents’ old toys?
In this topic, we will be awesome historians whilst we find out about families through generating family trees and ordering eras of time. We will also look at gaining an understanding of what life may have been like for our grandparents when considering toys and games, their homes and what shopping was like.
Within this topic, we will also be impressive designers as we learn about designing, making and evaluating purposeful, function and appealing products. We will design and make out own windmill with moving parts considering the different materials that we can use to ensure that out structure is robust.
In English, we will be completing lots of fun learning activities based on the stories ‘Goldilocks and the three bears’, by Jonathan Langley and ‘Old Bear’ by Jane Hissy.

In Year 1 one, the children will take the statutory phonics screening check in the summer term. Therefore it is crucial that a consistent approach to the teaching of phonics is used. We deliver phonics using the Read Write Inc (RWI) phonics scheme. Please watch the videos below to help explain what this is and how you can best support your child.
